Alison Brie stars in the new movie adaptation of Masters of the Universe, in theaters June 5

The actress tells PEOPLE at a fan screening that she and Jared Leto had fun playing the story's campy villains

“Everything felt light on its feet and it was a lot of fun,” says Brie

Alison Brie is in her villain era and loving it.

Masters of the Universe (in theaters Friday) brings beloved Mattel characters He-Man, Teela, Man-at-Arms and more to the big screen. Fighting the Heroic Warriors of Eternia are Jared Leto's Skeletor and Brie's Evil-Lyn — an iconic duo the actress says was “so fun” to portray.

“They're evil, but they're funny about it,” Brie, 43, tells PEOPLE at a New York City fan screening of Masters of the Universe on Monday, June 1. “They have a very complicated relationship, very love/hate, especially from my end.”

With villainous sorceress Evil-Lyn, she quips, “There's a lot of eye rolling… You don't want to take yourself too seriously if you're evil. You want to really savor it.”

The sci-fi fantasy's “impeccable” director, Travis Knight, “really let us improvise a lot,” adds Brie. “So everything felt light on its feet and it was a lot of fun.”

The colorful Masters of the Universe stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, a.k.a. He-Man, led by the Sword of Power to his homeworld-saving destiny. Costarring are Camila Mendes as the warrior Teela, Idris Elba as General Man-at-Arms, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress and an eclectic team of otherworldly warriors.

Would Brie and Leto remain in character between takes? “No playing villains off camera,” reports the actress. “I was just having fun all the time, taking it all in. They built these incredible sets and they were really there.”

She also gave Leto, 54, “some breaks,” she recalls. “He wore a very heavy blue muscle suit as Skeletor. I feel like I wanted to let him conserve his energy.”

Among Brie's other upcoming screen projects is The Revisionist, premiering on June 5 at the Tribeca Film Festival.
