Moriah Wilson was a 25-year-old competitive cyclist on the rise when she was murdered by Kaitlin Armstrong on May 11, 2022, in Austin. The case is explored in a new Netflix documentary, *The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson*.

Armstrong, a 34-year-old yoga instructor, was living with cyclist Colin Strickland at the time. Strickland and Armstrong had long been in an on-again-off-again relationship. During a break in 2021, Strickland engaged in a brief romantic relationship with Wilson, with whom he'd recently trained, while she was visiting in Austin.

When she returned in May 2022, the two reconnected as friends. Wilson, who was staying with a friend, Caitlin Cash, was ambushed at Cash's home by Armstrong, who was allegedly driven by jealousy. She shot Wilson three times, twice in the head and once in the heart.

Armstrong denied any involvement in Wilson's murder, but she soon fled Austin, leading to an international manhunt.

Here's everything to know about where Kaitlin Armstrong is now.

Armstrong was initially arrested for failing to pay for Botox

Investigators began to suspect Armstrong after discovering that surveillance footage from the night of the murder showed a vehicle similar to her Jeep Grand Cherokee near Cash's residence. Suspicions intensified when they learned Armstrong owned a 9mm handgun that matched shell casings found at the crime scene.

According to *48 Hours*, authorities initially arrested her on a misdemeanor theft warrant for allegedly neglecting to pay for a Botox treatment at an Austin medical spa. When she was brought in, they questioned her about the murder.

But as we see in the *The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson*, Armstrong stonewalls a detective, refusing to answer questions and demanding to leave. Also, the warrant they brought her in on turned out to be invalid because her birthdate was listed incorrectly. The investigators had no choice but to let her walk.

"They let her go. They concluded that they didn't quite have enough information to hold her on," explains Rickey Jones, a second district attorney, in the documentary. "I don't even think at the time they had enough information to say Colin wasn't driving the Jeep."

After tracking Strickland's movements on the night of the murder, investigators were able to rule him out as a suspect. They also confirmed that the gun they recovered at the Strickland's residence was the weapon used in the murder. On May 17, six days after the murder, a warrant was issued for Armstrong's arrest. And that's when investigators realized she was nowhere to be found.

It turned out that she'd sold the Jeep to a CarMax dealership the day after her interrogation for $12,000, according to PEOPLE. On May 14, she flew from Texas to New York, where her sister Christie was living.

Armstrong fled the country using her sister’s passport

On May 18, Armstrong flew from Newark, N.J., to San José, Costa Rica.

As Det. Richard Spitler notes in the documentary, security footage obtained from the airport made it appear as if Armstrong had changed her hair in an effort to "appear more like her sister." That tracks when you learn that she used her sister's passport, not her own, when boarding the flight. (Christie, as noted by *48 Hours,* claimed that she did not give her sister her passport.)

Armstrong's attempt to change her appearance continued once she landed in Costa Rica. Dr. Jorge Badilla, a plastic surgeon in San José, spoke with *Dateline* about the $6,000 worth of work he did on Armstrong, who introduced herself to him as Allison Page.

Badilla revealed that Armstrong was resistant when he asked to snap a "before" photograph prior to a procedure that included lip fillers, rhinoplasty and a brow lift. “The day of the surgery: it’s a must,” he said. “She told me, ‘Okay, doctor, you can take pictures, but only with my cell phone.’”

She was arrested thanks to a fake ad for a yoga instructor

Having received a tip that Armstrong may be in the Costa Rican village of Santa Teresa, U.S. Marshals put out a fake job posting for a yoga instructor, knowing that to be Armstrong's trade. And it worked.

After scheduling a meeting with "Ari," the name she was using, Deputy Emir Perez approached her at the hostel where she was staying. On *48 Hours*, he recalled her having a "bandage on her nose and possibly her lips were swollen" from her recent surgery. But "the eyes are the exact same ones that I saw in the picture."

Authorities arrested her on June 29. It had been 43 days since Wilson was shot to death. After being taken back to Texas, Armstrong was charged with first-degree murder and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.**

She briefly escaped from custody

While incarcerated at Austin's Travis County Jail, Armstrong briefly escaped custody during a trip to an outside doctor for a leg injury.

"The minute she left that doctor's office, she booked it," recalls Det. Katy Connor in the documentary. "We were hearing that she did start working out excessively leading up to that so there was definitely some thought process that went into that escape."

The *Austin American-Statesman* obtained an affidavit that claimed she's faked a leg injury so she wouldn't have to wear restraints. After fleeing, it's said she was able to free her left hand.

Armstrong made it nearly a mile, but was caught while trying to scale a six-foot fence.

Armstrong went to trial on Nov. 1, 2023, pleading not guilty to all charges against her. A little more than two weeks later, she was found guilty of first-degree murder. She was sentenced to 90 years in prison.

In May 2024, Wilson's parents filed a wrongful death civil suit against Armstrong. A judge later ordered that Armstrong pay a total of $15 million. As reported by KXAN, the judgement serves in part to prevent Armstrong from profiting on her crime via any movie or book deals.

“If there’s ever an opportunity for her to financially benefit from this crime, this judgment will prevent her from getting any of that money until my clients are properly compensated,” said attorney Randy Howry.

Armstrong, who is now 38 years old, is currently serving her sentence at the Dr. Lane Murray Unit Texas state prison for women in Gatesville, Tex.**
