April 7 marks the birthday of one of the most recognizable faces in cinema history, Jackie Chan. Born in Hong Kong in 1954 as Chan Kong-sang.
Jackie Chan had a rough childhood. His parents were so poor that they considered selling him to the doctor who delivered him. At the age of seven, his father moved to Australia for work, leaving Jackie at the China Drama Academy.
For the next ten years, Jackie lived a life of intense discipline. He trained for up to 19 hours a day, learning martial arts, acrobatics, singing, and acting. This training and education formed a performance group of the school’s best students named the “Seven Little Fortunes,” which included future stars like Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao.
Jackie entered the film industry as a stuntman; he was initially pushed to be the next Bruce Lee. However, after several films failed to find an audience, Jackie realized he needed his own style, so he created characters who were often clumsy, felt pain, and used everyday objects like chairs or ladders to defend themselves.
His most famous films were Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master, which pioneered the comedy-kung fu genre.
While Jackie was a massive star in Asia by the 1980s, it took several years and many attempts to break into the American market. His international fame started in 1995 with the release of Rumble in the Bronx, followed by the massive success of the Rush Hour series.

Jackie Chan is known for performing his own stunts, resulting in a long list of injuries that includes broken bones, severe burns, and near-death experiences. He has famously stated that he has broken almost every bone in his body, with some fractures occurring multiple times.
His most serious injury was a fall from a tree that caused him to crack his skull on a rock, with a piece of bone pushing into his brain. He required emergency brain surgery, leaving a permanent hole in his head with a plastic plug.
Jackie Chan founded the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in 1988 and the Dragon’s Heart Foundation in 2004 to help children and the elderly in remote areas. In 2016, his legendary career was honored with an honorary Academy Award for his extraordinary achievements in film.
