It's not easy to make a good comedy. As one of the more subjective genres of film, satisfying a wide swath of moviegoers and making them laugh is arguably more challenging than crafting a compelling drama. To concoct a beloved comedy movie, it all comes down to sharp comic timing, game performances, and clever writing to sell joke after joke.
Of course, there are so many comedy options streaming now that it can be hard to know what's really worth it and what's a waste of your time. Ahead, we've narrowed down the list of our 15 favorite comedy movies streaming across all the major platforms, from Netflix to Hulu to Paramount+, and why they tickle our funny bones.

Cooper Raiff as Andrew and Evan Assante as David in 'Cha Cha Real Smooth'. Apple TV+
This sweet indie comedy-drama was such a hit at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival that Apple TV bought it for $15 million. It's easy to see why: Starring Cooper Raiff (who also wrote and directed the film), *Cha Cha Real Smooth* tells the story of Andrew, a recent college graduate who develops an unexpected connection with a 32-year-old single mother (Dakota Johnson) and her autistic daughter (Vanessa Burghardt).
Peppered with sharp observational humor — largely from Andrew's job as a "party starter" — *Cha Cha Real Smooth* is "a smartly constructed, amiably appealing coming-of-age zhuzhed up with mainstream marquee names," writes EW's critic, "and enough sharp edges to transcend the more familiar outlines of the script." —*Kevin Jacobsen*

Tracy Camilla Johns as Nola Darling and Spike Lee as Mars Blackmon in 'She's Gotta Have It'.
Shot on a shoestring budget in black and white, *She's Gotta Have It* launched director Spike Lee's career with a comic portrait of a free-spirited young woman (Tracy Camilla Johns) dating three very different men. Lee steals the show as Mars Blackmon, a boastful, fast-talking bike messenger competing for Nola's heart with the grounded Jamie (Tommy Redmond Hicks) and musclebound model Greer (John Canada Terrell).
Despite the trio's pressure for her to settle down, Nola insists on making her own romantic and sexual choices. This groundbreaking indie proves that a talented filmmaker can tell a compelling story, even with limited resources. —*Danny Horn*

Mark Eydelshteyn as Ivan 'Vanya' Zakharov and Mikey Madison as Anora 'Ani' Mikheeva in 'Anora'.
It's obvious when watching *Anora* that writer-director Sean Baker never set out to make a Best Picture winner. Its profane sense of humor, small-scale production, and centering of a sex worker as a protagonist hardly seem up the Academy's alley. And yet, the brilliance of *Anora* is in the way Baker synthesizes all those elements to tell a hilarious yet profound story of a confident young woman (Mikey Madison) experiencing the highs of a whirlwind marriage and the subsequent lows of realizing her Cinderella story may not have a happy ending. —*K.J.*
Where to watch *Anora*: Hulu

Heath Ledger as Patrick Verona, Allison Janney as Ms. Perky, and Julia Stiles as Katarina 'Kat' Stratford in '10 Things I Hate About You'.
Buena Vista Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection
Released among a slew of teen movie adaptations of classic literature/plays (*Clueless*; *She's All That*; *Cruel Intentions*, etc.), *10 Things I Hate About You* transports William Shakespeare's *The Taming of the Shrew* to a modern-day Seattle high school. A tangled web of romance begins when new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) takes a liking to sophomore Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). But he cannot pursue her properly because of her father's strict rules: She can only date if her fiercely independent older sister, Kat (Julia Stiles), does first. Cameron then sets a plan in motion that results in mysterious bad boy Patrick (Heath Ledger) wooing Kat, as Cameron hopes to pull off his grand scheme and go out with Bianca. —*K.J.*

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in 'Deadpool'.
Joe Lederer/Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation/Everett Collection
Marvel's first R-rated superhero film, *Deadpool* distinguishes itself from the genre with its raucous sense of humor. Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is dying of cancer until he signs up for an underground experimental treatment that triggers his latent mutant abilities, turning him into Deadpool, an unstoppable force of over-the-top violence.
The new Wade is an endlessly wisecracking chatterbox, shattering the fourth wall with gleeful abandon. As EW's critic notes, "Reynolds and his character are a blast of laughing gas in a genre that tends to take itself way too seriously." —*D.H.*

Ryan Gosling as Ken and Margot Robbie as Barbie in 'Barbie'.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Greta Gerwig did the unthinkable with this candy-colored comedy, making a film based on a doll into a hilarious, emotionally resonant Oscar winner. Margot Robbie stars as Stereotypical Barbie, a seemingly perfect doll who enjoys her life in Barbie Land until a sudden existential crisis strikes her. She then sets off to figure out her true purpose, with the hilariously vapid Ken (Ryan Gosling) tagging along, too. EW's critic calls *Barbie* "a fierce, funny, and deeply feminist adventure that dares you to laugh *and* cry, even if you're made of plastic." —*K.J.*

Chris Evans as Hugh Ransom Drysdale in 'Knives Out'. Claire Folger/Lionsgate
Inspired by the murder mystery page-turners of Agatha Christie, *Knives Out* proves Rian Johnson to be one of the cleverest writers working today. Daniel Craig stars as Benoit Blanc, a Southern-drawling Hercule Poirot-style private detective who helps a wealthy family uncover the truth behind the death of their beloved patriarch (Christopher Plummer). Surrounding Craig is a fabulous troupe of actors reveling in their delicious characters, from Chris Evans to Toni Collette, though you'll likely leave thinking most about Ana de Armas (and her coffee mug) for reasons we won't spoil. EW's critic rightfully calls *Knives Out* "a silly, stabby, supremely clever whodunnit." —*K.J.*

Tony Curtis as Joe/Josephine, Jack Lemmon as Jerry/Daphne, and Marilyn Monroe as Sugar 'Kane' Kowalczyk in 'Some Like It Hot'.
Hailed as one of the greatest films of all time, *Some Like It Hot* lives up to its reputation. After jazz musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a mob killing, they disguise themselves as women to join an all-female band and escape on a train to Miami.
As the journey begins, they meet Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), an astonishingly beautiful singer and ukulele player, and soon both men are secretly competing for her attention without giving away their identities. A witty script paired with director Billy Wilder's precise timing makes the film a treasure for comedy fans. —*D.H.*

David Koechner as Champ Kind, Christina Applegate as Veronica Corningstone, Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy, Paul Rudd as Brian Fantana, and Steve Carell as Brick Tamland in 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy'.
Will Ferrell seems to delight in extreme characters, and *Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy* provides him with one of his greatest: a self-obsessed, blustering blowhard of a 1970s newscaster who acts like the king of San Diego.
Ron Burgundy is definitely in tune with his times, but once times change — like when a female journalist (Christina Applegate) is promoted to coanchor — he responds with bewilderment and… well, more bewilderment. As tensions rise, Ron and Veronica's brutal knock-down fight in the middle of the newsroom is the perfect comic expression of the battle of the sexes. —*D.H.*

Clueless (1995)

Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz in 'Clueless'.
Paramount Pictures
It's been three decades since *Clueless* was released in theaters, but its sharp wit and stylish visuals have only helped it grow more in fashion. Alicia Silverstone, in her most enduring performance, plays Cher Horowitz, a popular high schooler who exerts her influence through matchmaking and giving a makeover to the new kid in town. This modern adaptation of Jane Austen's *Emma* is far from superficial, though, as writer-director Amy Heckerling explores the turbulence of teenage girlhood with well-observed humor and charm. While EW's critic gave it a C+ in 1995, all these years later, we consider that initial assessment way harsh. —*K.J.*

Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron and Tim Meadows as Ron Duvall in 'Mean Girls'.
Paramount Pictures
In the high school of the American imagination, Regina George (Rachel McAdams) will always rule the hallways. Regina is the teenage apex predator of North Shore High, always looking for an opportunity to bolster her impeccable popularity or take down a potential rival.
In the sharp, satirical *Mean Girls*, good-hearted fish-out-of-water Cady (Lindsay Lohan) is recruited into an effort to bring down Regina and her "Plastics" clique, including wannabe Gretchen (Lacey Chabert) and dim bulb Karen (Amanda Seyfried). With a biting script by Tina Fey, the film fearlessly explores the dark side of the early aughts adolescent social scene. —*D.H.*

Jack Quaid as Nathan 'Novocaine' Caine in 'Novocaine'.
Marcos Cruz/Paramount Pictures
The inability to feel pain would certainly be nice for many people who experience it on a daily basis. But that lack of sensation also has its downsides, as this kinetic action comedy demonstrates. Jack Quaid stars as Nathan Caine, a man with congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis, which makes him extra cautious not to accidentally hurt himself in any way. After the woman he loves is held hostage during a robbery, Nathan springs into action and uses his condition as an asset as he goes down an ultraviolent path of revenge. The fun of *Novocaine* is in watching Quaid's commitment to the bit as the film pushes its premise to the extreme. —*K.J.*
Where to watch *Novocaine*: Paramount+

Joan Chen as Chungsing Wang and Izaac Wang as Chris Wang in 'Didi'.

Picture it: It's summer 2008. You're fretting about whether you're on your friend's MySpace Top 8; nervously communicating with a crush via AIM; dealing with family dysfunction as you try to figure out your place in the world. Such are the concerns of 13-year-old Chris (Izaac Wang) in this humorous yet heartfelt coming-of-age story based loosely on writer-director Sean Wang's own growing up. As he navigates the awkward tension of a first date or makes friends with an older group of skateboarders, Chris grapples with the anxiety of trying to fit in, while often finding himself exasperated by his struggling mother (Joan Chen, in an Oscar-worthy performance).
EW's critic calls *Dìdi* "a delightful and honest portrait of teen angst," one that will surely resonate with millennials who grew up in the late-aughts. —*K.J.*

Dustin Hoffman as Bernie Focker, Ben Stiller as Gaylord 'Greg' Focker, Barbra Streisand as Roz Focker, Teri Polo as Pam Byrnes-Focker, and Blythe Danner as Dina Byrnes in 'Meet the Fockers'.
Universal/Courtesy Everett Collection
While 2000's *Meet the Parents* introduced neurotic nurse Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) to his girlfriend's hard-to-please father Jack (Robert De Niro), the second installment brings the spiky in-laws to Miami to meet Greg's free-spirited family: Dustin Hoffman as Greg's father, and Barbra Streisand as his mother, a sex therapist for seniors.
Jack is unimpressed, but EW’s critic appreciates the new cast members: "It turns out that Streisand has stumbled into a delicious third-quarter career, if she wants one, as an exuberantly less-than-perfect hot mama. As for Hoffman, the crazy Focker steals the picture just by having fun, salty as a lox." —*D.H.*

Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding in 'I, Tonya'. Neon
Before she was Barbie, Margot Robbie played Tonya Harding, the much-maligned figure skater connected to a 1994 assault on her rival, Nancy Kerrigan. *I, Tonya* presents Harding's story in a black comedy mockumentary style through unreliable, contradictory interviews with Harding, her abusive, sad-sack ex-husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan), and others.
EW’s critic asserts that "Robbie is the real revelation. In a performance that goes far beyond bad perms and tabloid punchlines, she’s a powerhouse: a scrappy, defiant subversion of the American dream. You won’t just find yourself rooting for this crazy kid; you might even fall a little bit in love." —*D.H.*
