Shailene Woodley laughed and walked away when a TMZ reporter asked her about Aaron Rodgers’ recent comments regarding the end of their relationship

Woodley and Rodgers were romantically involved between 2021 and 2022; they called off their engagement in February 2022

Rodgers recently disputed Woodley’s past characterizations of their relationship during an appearance on his Pittsburgh Steelers teammate Cam Heyward’s podcast

Shailene Woodley only had a laugh to share when she was asked for her take on Aaron Rodgers‘ new comments about the end of their engagement.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, 42, made an appearance on his teammate Cam Heyward’s Not Just Footballpodcaston Thursday, Sept. 10, where he disputed past characterizations of their romance.

PEOPLE first confirmed that the pair were dating in February 2021, and they announced their engagement that same month. By February 2022, though, a source close to Rodgers said they called off their engagement just over a year after making their relationship public. After a brief period of reconciliation, the on-off couple broke up again that April.

“I date Shailene, I propose and she says yes,” Rodgers said on Not Just Football. “She maybe felt like she was forced to make a decision, she could have said no. But not a couple of days after that, she tells me before we get married like, ‘I got to go f--- this guy.’ “

He further claimed, “‘Cause her story is, I ruined her life and gave her crazy depression because I left her, but in actuality she told me that and took off the ring by March. I proposed in December, took off the ring by March, and we had a couple of times when we tried to get reunited and nothing ever happened, and there wasn’t even a relationship in ‘22 to break off. She literally told me, ‘I don’t want to be with you.’ ”

When Woodley, 34, stepped out in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 13 for a pre-Emmy Awards event, she was approached by a TMZ reporter outside who asked if she had anything to say about Rodgers and his latest comments. In response, the actress simply laughed and turned to walk away with a friend who accompanied her.

Woodley, who recently won the first Emmy of her career at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmys for her performance in the Hulu series Paradise, has previously indicated this relationship was a difficult one for her.

In a 2023 interview with Net-a-Porter‘s digital title PORTER, Woodley said that she was going through “the darkest, hardest time in my life” while she filmed the Showtime series Three Women between October 2021 and May 2022. “It was winter in New York, and my personal life was s----, so it felt like a big pain bubble for eight months,” she said at the time. “I was so grateful that at least I could go to work and cry and process my emotions through my character.”

She also said in that interview that public interest in the relationship “just felt violating” in a way she had not experienced prior to dating Rodgers. In 2024, Woodley similarly told Outside magazine that discussing her relationship with Rodgers “always makes me cry” and described experiencing depression for roughly six months in 2022.

“It was not right. But it was beautiful,” she said of the relationship at that time.

Rodgers also commented on his past relationship with former professional racing driver Danica Patrick during the Sept. 10 podcast appearance and suggested the end of both relationships unfairly painted him in a negative light. (In June 2025, Rodgers revealed he had secretly married a woman whom he has only identified as Brittani.)

“There’s just a lot of narratives out there that are just not true, and they portray things a certain way because they can get away with it,” Rodgers said. “No one knows what they’re doing.”

Regarding the women he previously dated, Rodgers also added, “The height of their fame was when they were with me.”

Woodley will next appear on screen in the upcoming Netflix movie Unabomber, which begins streaming Sept. 25. Rodgers and the Steelers opened the 2026 NFL season with a 20-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 13.
