There’s truly no turning back for Kanan Stark.

In the final minutes of the penultimate episode of Power Book III: Raising Kanan’s fifth and finalseason 5, Kanan (Mekai Curtis) killed Uncle Marvin (London Brown). The death came shortly after Jukebox (Hailey Kilgore) killed Snaps (Wendell Pierce) and Pop (Erika Woods).

Kanan arrived at the church where Marvin had just given the priest a briefcase of cash intended for his daughter, Jukebox (Hailey Kilgore), for safekeeping, in case “something happens to me.”

Marvin knew what Kanan was there to do and told his nephew, “You’re gonna see me in your nightmares.” He said that Kanan would eventually come to terms with what he’d done, but he’d be “so dead inside by then,” and he told him he would die alone because he’d have “nobody left.”

He rushed him then, telling him to shoot before the priest returned, and Kanan shot Marvin dead. “I didn’t see that coming,” Brown, 45, tells PEOPLE of his character’s death.

“I didn’t know Marvin was going out like this,” the actor says. “I’m just glad it lasted this long.”

Knowing the Power universe, Brown says he was totally aware that “nobody’s safe,” and sees his five-season run on Raising Kanan as a blessing. “I didn’t trust anything. Every day, I was just glad to be employed.”

There’s just one thing he says he’d do differently. “If I had to do another take, I wanted to flip Kanan off right on my last breath. I would’ve done that,” Brown says. Though he’s careful not to call it a “regret,” he says, “I always think about that.”

He’s happy overall with the scene otherwise. “It’s nice. As opposed to it being some major shootout, it’s just one-on-one. It’s intimate, it’s quiet, and it’s just those two.”

Kanan being the one to pull the trigger and kill Marvin — after he killed his other uncle, Lou (Malcolm Mays), in the season 5 premiere — is “going to mean something,” Brown adds. “I think it just makes it worse. If it was [Unique], I think people could have accepted it, like, man, they were already at odds.” The same would be true if it had been “a random street guy, stick-up kid” who pulled the trigger.

“It just really shows how menacing Kanan is,” Brown says. “Shout out to the writers for that part, because I didn’t see that [coming].”

“At the end of the day, I’m just glad they trusted me with the part, man. I didn’t want to waste anybody’s time,” he adds. “The fact that people feel so emotionally invested — I’m glad they care that much.”

With the series finale approaching next week, Brown says he’s going in as blind as fans are. “I don’t know about the finale. I really locked in on what Marvin had going on, so I couldn’t even try to worry about things I couldn’t control,” he says. “That’s going to be another surprise. I don’t know what they got lined up.”

The series finale of Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres Aug. 7 on Starz.
