A popular pizza chain that has been operating for more than half a century has filed for bankruptcy after closing its doors.
Gina Maria’s Pizza abruptly shut its four Minneapolis locations in October 2025 without prior notice, leaving many hungry customers scratching their heads as to the reason why, according to local outlet, Bring Me the News.
The restaurant, founded in 1975, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Thursday, March 26, according to court records cited by The Independent, Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal and The Street.

Northern Brands Inc., the company that operated Gina Maria’s Pizza, reported around $2.9 million in liabilities and approximately $64,000 in assets, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.
This type of bankruptcy filing means the company will likely want to liquidate the business, not restructure it. Instead, a trustee will sell the nonexempt assets and use the proceeds to pay creditors, in line with the Bankruptcy Code, according to the United States Courts website.
“The Bankruptcy Code will allow the debtor to keep certain "exempt" property; but a trustee will liquidate the debtor's remaining assets,” it continued.
Gina Maria’s Pizza had locations operating in Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, Edina and Plymouth.

The pizza restaurant said on its website, which is no longer live, that it had “officially closed its doors” in October, according to Bring Me the News. “The decision did not come easily. We’re proud of what we built together and will always cherish the relationships formed over hot pizzas, warm smiles, and great conversation,” the chain reportedly posted at the time.
Gina Maria’s Pizza has its Facebook page to say “permanently closed,” prompting loyal customers to express that they were saddened by the news.
“Closed. Sad. Easily the BEST pizza anywhere. Nothing in Naples FL comes close!” one commented on the post, while another said: “I’m so bummed, I live a block away from the E.P store went there for 25 years, just love the pepperoni and green olive, best pizza by far now in Richfield and they opened the Edina store. I wonder why they closed. Very bummed.”
A third added: “So sad to hear they are closed.”
A new restaurant called Pizzas Gina opened in November 2025 in the former Gina Maria’s Pizza location in Eden Prairie, per local news outlet Eden Prairie Local News. Ulises Godinez, who managed the Eden Prairie store and an additional location, decided to open a new establishment using “the same recipes after Gina Maria’s closed,” per the outlet.
Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal noted that Gina Maria’s Pizza is not to be confused with Gina Maria’s Pizzeria, operating in California. The two businesses are not related.
Gina Maria’s Pizza was contacted by PEOPLE for comment, but did not immediately respond.
