Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas' daughter, Malti, had a scary start to her young life.

During a recent appearance on Jay Shetty’s *On Purpose* podcast, Nick opened up about how Malti “came to the world under, sort of, very intense circumstances,” when she was born via surrogate in January 2022.

“We were expecting her to arrive in April of the year she was born, and we get a call that it’s going to be sooner. So basically, we went into action," he said, adding, "We got to the hospital, and she came out. She was 1 pound, 11 ounces, and ... purple, basically."

Nick explained that the "angels at the NICU" then "resuscitated her in that moment, and got her taken care of really quickly and intubated and everything else."

Because this was during the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his wife took turns taking 12-hour shifts at the hospital over three and a half months while Malti had to stay in the NICU.

"I could still sort of like, smell it, you know, there's always visceral things," he recalled of that time. "It was both comforting and frightening, to be there every day and to see other families going through similar situations."

The singer-songwriter described how his daughter "fought every day" and eventually, slowly but surely, started to gain weight. After more than three months and six blood transfusions, she was able to finally go home with her parents.

Now, Nick said he gets to enjoy marveling at how "incredible" his daughter is. "I feel like she knows how she entered the world and what that first chapter of her life was like," he said. "And so every day is a gift, and you can actually feel it in her in the way that she behaves and how exciting everything is. I don't know how much she remembers, probably nothing. But spiritually I believe that there's gratitude in her and, you know, she's incredible."

Elsewhere in the podcast, the singer got emotional when he shared a sweet update on his daughter as well. “Our daughter’s incredible, she’s just, she’s magic in every sense of the world,” he said through tears. “She just turned four a couple weeks ago. It blows my mind, I look at her and I can see her future. I just know she’s going to do amazing things, and I’m awestruck that I get to experience her magic. She’s just perfect in every way.”
