Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s rep confirmed that the couple is changing their children’s U.K. school.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex loved the original school but chose to withdraw them due to security risks.

As non-working royal family members, Harry and Meghan are not currently eligible for taxpayer-funded police protection.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s children, Archie and Lilibet, started at their new U.K. school last week, but just days into the term, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to withdraw them and move them to a different school in the area. The couple’s spokesperson told Hello!that this was due to security concerns.

“The decision for the children to move school was taken following a discussion with the family’s security team about the practicalities of their current arrangements,” the rep explained. “The parents remain extremely grateful to all the teachers and staff for the love, care, and effort they have shown their family. This decision should in no way be interpreted as a reflection on the school or the exceptional care the children have received there.”

The name of Archie and Lilibet’s first private school was never shared publicly, with some outlets purposely withholding it to protect the family’s privacy. The location of the new school and Meghan and Harry’s home have also been kept private.

A friend of the couple’s told Hello! that Meghan and Harry hadn’t wanted to change their children’s school but needed to prioritize their children’s safety. “It’s a real shame, because they absolutely adored the school, the kids and their parents,” the friend said. “It was perfect for them in every way and the children really enjoyed their time there. They really wanted to make it work, but they had to make a difficult decision based on the fact that the team couldn’t make the school run operationally secure.”

On September 5, The Telegraph wrote that it learned Meghan and Harry’s biggest security concern was their children’s school run. The couple lost their taxpayer-funded police protection when they stepped back from their senior working royal family roles in 2020.

Earlier today, People reported that both Meghan and Harry will receive new risk assessments from the Royal and VIP Executive Committee following their move back to the U.K. This opens up the possibility of their family receiving police protection again; they currently have just private security.

Yesterday, Meghan shared her first Instagram documenting the family’s new chapter in the U.K.—and made it clear that they are loving their time there. She posted a video of Archie and Lilibet enjoying their new U.K. home, captioning it with an emoji of the British flag and a heart.

Last month, the couple’s rep confirmed to The New York Times that their U.K. move is temporary. “On the heels of a wonderful trip with family and friends this summer, Harry and Meghan have decided to spend an extended period in the U.K. this autumn,” the spokesperson said. “They are excited to have their children spend more time in the country that’s such an important part of their family’s story.”

The couple has kept their home in Montecito, California, and vacation property in Portugal.
