Joey King and Maisie Williams Reveal If They Experienced Paranormal Activity While Filming “Practical Magic 2 ”(Exclusive)

Joey King and Maisie Williams said that they used sage and read tarot cards while filming the Practical Magic 2, and they didn’t experience any unexpected paranormal activity

The original Practical Magic set was reportedly cursed by a witch brought on as a consultant after they got into a dispute with Warner Bros.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman welcomed King and Williams warmly into the franchise and will reprise their roles as the Owens sisters in the sequel

Did the set of Practical Magic 2 get a little too spooky? Costars Joey King and Maisie Williams seemingly weren’t taking any chances when they filmed the long-anticipated sequel to Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s classic witch film.

The actresses spoke with PEOPLE about potential supernatural experiences on set while attending Teen Vogue Fest on July 25 in Brooklyn, New York.

“I was a little worried about one thing, I can’t say what it is because it’s a bit of a spoiler,” King, 26, explained when asked if anything spooky happened. “I was sitting in the middle of this shape for a while and I was like, ‘Ooh.’ I went back to my hotel after that big sequence [and] I smudged and saged myself.”

King said that after taking the precautions “nothing happened.”

“I didn’t have any experiences like that,” Williams, 29, said. “But I was doing a lot of tarot cards at the time, and I was doing a lot of smudging,” the traditional process of burning sage to purify a space.

Nothing chilling happened on the set of the sequel, but the original Practical Magicset was seemingly cursed by a real-life witch that was brought on as a consultant. In a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, director Griffin Dunne detailed the experience.

“We got along great; she was very, very helpful,” Dunne recalled. “She was paid very handsomely by Warner Brothers for her consulting. I thought it would be fun to bring her out to Los Angeles, put her in a nice hotel and meet Sandy and Nicole, who were dying to meet her. When the producer called, she was greatly offended, and wanted three gross points [from the film’s profit]. She wanted to publish a Practical Magic cookbook and said, ‘You can’t buy me off with a hotel.’ “

“She left a curse in some sort of tongue on my voicemail — that was quite chilling, actually — and threatened to sue Warner Bros. So I took the little mini cassette [recording] and gave it to the legal department. They didn’t get halfway through it before they said, ‘F--- this,’ and wrote her a check,” Dunne claimed.

The first movie was released over 25 years ago and has become an iconic touchstone for millennials and the magically inclined.

King and Williams were aware of that when they signed on to join the world.

“As fans of the original film ourselves, I feel like when you love something as much as we already love Practical Magic, there’s just massive responsibility of joining the team and wanting to do it justice,” King told PEOPLE.

They still felt very welcome, though. “Sandra just texted us both straight away saying, ‘Welcome, anything you need.’ And that just made us feel so chill,” Williams revealed, adding that Bullock was “so lovely” and “the nicest woman in Hollywood.”

“They [Bullock and Kidman] are the best duo ever,” King agreed. “Nicole and I worked together a few years ago. She played my mom in a movie, and we became really close from that, which was so crazy. I’m just such a fan of her. I’m so in awe of her. She’s the nicest person ever.”

She added that Bullock “took us under her wing as her daughters.”

Bullock, 62, and Kidman, 59 will reprise their original roles as the Owens sisters for the upcoming sequel. King and Williams are playing the next generation of witches as Kylie and Antonia Owens, daughters of Sally (Bullock).

The two daughters start the film off a little suspicious of the family curse, forcing their mother and aunt to help them navigate their supernatural familial history.

The actresses also told PEOPLE what witchy power they would choose to have: “I want to be able to talk to animals,” Williams decided. “I want animals to understand what I’m saying and I want to be able to understand what they’re saying. All of them, but especially my dog. I just want to be able to be like, ‘Don’t run in the road. You’ll die.’ ”

“I want to be able to get from one side of L.A. to the next in like 10 minutes,” King joined in. “You know what I always say? I wish I could cast a spell to pack my suitcase and unpack my suitcase. Some travel spells would be nice.”

Practical Magic 2 premieres in theaters on Sept. 11.
