- Lilly Wachowski accused J.K. Rowling of “funding anti-trans legislation all over the world,” calling her actions “trans genocide.”

- Wachowski also referred to Rowling and Elon Musk as “literal Nazis.”

- Rowling’s agent responded to those accusations in a statement to EW.

Lilly Wachowski accused J.K. Rowling of “funding trans genocide” and compared her to the Nazis — and now, the author is responding to the *Matrix* filmmaker’s criticism.

The *Harry Potter* author’s agent, Neil Blair, issued a statement to ** denying Wachowski’s characterization of Rowling as funding anti-trans legislation.

“Freedom of speech is a principle we should all cherish. What matters is that J.K. Rowling’s views, as with anyone else’s, are represented accurately, fairly and respectfully and that individual opinion does not detract from those views,” Blair said. “To correct Lilly Wachowski, through The J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund, J.K Rowling supports women taking legal action in the UK to preserve their existing rights under the Equality Act 2010, which are often overlooked or threatened. She does not support legal actions aimed at harming transgender people or efforts to limit trans rights.”

Blair added, “People are free to disagree with her views but seriously defamatory allegations of this nature, even outrageously invoking the Nazi’s and the genocide that they committed, should never be presented as fact when they are clearly fabricated and not based on any evidence.”

Blair’s statement came in response to comments made by Wachowski, who publicly came out as transgender in 2016, in a new interview with *Variety*.

“She is funding trans genocide,” Wachowski opined. “J.K. Rowling funds trans genocide, full stop. So, if you support *Harry Potter*, you’re supporting trans genocide. The money that goes into you enjoying these products, a portion of that money goes to J.K. Rowling and that money goes into her funding anti-trans legislation all over the world.”

Wachowski suggested that consumers should take a principled stand against Rowling’s work, including the forthcoming HBO *Harry Potter* series. “In the same way that if you are against Elon Musk, you boycott or don’t buy Tesla; and if you’re against global warming/climate change, you try not to buy as much gas, you try to mitigate your use of these products,” she said. “It’s simple math. So, your enjoyment of these shows, and continued support of these shows, is supporting my eradication.”

Earlier in the interview, when *Variety* identified Rowling and Musk as “two people who have inflicted an enormous amount of cultural damage on the trans community,” Wachowski said, “these people are Nazis. They’re literal Nazis. There is a one-to-one connection between Elon Musk and the Nazi community. He did a full-blown *Sieg Heil* on a national stage. I think that the global community needs to firewall the U.S. from their populaces in a way because this country has allowed Nazi propaganda to proliferate at such a degree that it has become dangerous to the global population.”

EW has reached out to representatives for Wachowski, Musk, Warner Bros., and HBO for comment.

In 2025, Rowling launched the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund, which “offers legal funding support to individuals and organisations fighting to retain women’s and girls’ sex-based rights in all aspects of life including the workplace, sports and clubs, and protected single-sex spaces.”

Though the fund’s website does not explicitly mention transgender people, it effectively states that its primary purpose is to provide support for individuals and organizations who have expressed skepticism about the trans community. The website says that it seeks to help those who “have lost their livelihoods, suffered harm, loss of earnings or been discriminated against because of their expressed beliefs on biological sex being unchangeable” and those who “are being forced to comply with unlawful policies, practices or guidance which undermine protected single-sex spaces including in the workplace, activities, associations and services for women and girls.”

Rowling has been described as a transphobe and a bully for her outspoken views on the transgender community. She has pushed back on the narrative that she is transphobic, at one point posting, “I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans.”

However, Rowling has frequently identified with the TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) movement. She has habitually shared anti-trans rhetoric on social media, at one point tweeting that she’d “happily do two years” in prison instead of supporting policies protecting transgender people from hate crimes. She also publicly celebrated after the U.K. Supreme Court ruled that womanhood is legally defined by biological sex, which was viewed by many as a blow to the trans community.

Rowling also denied the existence of transgender children, writing that “there are no trans kids” in 2024.

Rowling’s rhetoric has led multiple *Harry Potter* film stars — including franchise leads Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson — to speak out against her and share statements of public support for the trans community.
