Bodycam footage has captured a man driving away from police while still handcuffed.

John Robinson sped away from officers with his car doors still open after he was accused of driving a “potentially stolen vehicle”.

Police noticed Robinson “behaving suspiciously” at a petrol station in Cwmbran, Wales, and found an imitation firearm in his car while speaking to him.

The 48-year-old was handcuffed while still in the driver’s seat of the SUV, but when the officers tried to remove him from the vehicle, Robinson said he was “disabled”.

The officer told the grandfather and father of five: “Yeah, that’s fine, take your time.”

After pulling away from the officer’s grasp Robinson drove off, despite having both hands manacled. An officer was struck by one of the car’s open doors as it sped away.

Robinson was soon tracked down at Cwmbran Stadium, where he was taken into custody. A male passenger was also inside the vehicle.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and possession of an imitation firearm.

Emma Harris, defending, said: “The driving was short-lived. The defendant panicked and made a series of poor decisions.”

Robinson, who is originally from Charlton, south London, appeared at Newport Crown Court via video link from Belmarsh Prison.

He told the court: “I didn’t come to Wales to commit any crimes. I really want to say I’m sorry.”

Sentencing Robinson to a year in jail and a three-year driving ban following his release, Daniel Williams, the judge, said: “This was highly dangerous driving and you tried to evade the police.”

Robinson will have to pay a victim surcharge and sit an extended retest to drive again.
