LONDON, June 2 (Reuters) - Britain on Tuesday set out a target to reduce emissions by around 87% in the period 2038 to 2042, down from baseline levels set in 1990.
The target confirms the Labour Party government's commitment to producing energy from cleaner sources - something it says helps insulate the country from fossil fuel price volatility, builds an industry that benefits the economy and is consistent with international ambitions to limit rising global temperatures.

“As Britain faces the second fossil fuel shock of the decade, the only way to protect family and business finances is to drive for clean homegrown power that we control," energy minister Ed Miliband said in a statement.
The government said the plan for delivering the reduction would be published as soon as possible once parliament had approved the target.
