The uncertainty about her role comes after Seyfried recently shared what she envisions Sophie’s life would be like if Mamma Mia 3 ever got made.
“Oh, with kids. I mean, I love being a mother,” said Seyfried of the character and herself in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of The Testament of Ann Lee on Dec. 14.
I" love playing a mother, and I would love to dive into the curiosities of motherhood and raising children on a Greek island — just like Donna did with Sophie," Seyfried continued,
Seyfried shares daughter Nina, 8, and son Thomas, 5, with her husband, author Thomas Sadoski.

“I’m going to keep campaigning for that movie until I’m blue in the face,” she added.
Producer Judy Craymer revealed to Deadline in May 2025 that a script for Mamma Mia 3 — which would serve as a follow-up to 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again — has been completed.

While waiting for production of the flick to begin, Seyfried has been busy working on historical drama The Testament of Ann Lee.
“It is an interpretation of late 18th century drawings and paintings of the Shaker movement,” she told Norton, 62, elsewhere on the chat show. “Ann was brave and it was empowering to play an empowered woman."
“It is an incredible experience I think as a movie goer and it’s not the kind of movie you will ever see again,” she continued.
When asked about her Manchester accent for the role, she added, “Boy, it was tough.”
